As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
You are invited to a unique event at al-Maqasid on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at 5 pm: Come and learn
about a project that is bringing wealth of scholarship on the Qur’an to the English speaking world: The
Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’an (IEQ).
The IEQ Project was conceived in the winter of 2007 by Dr. Muzaffar Iqbal, President of Center for
Islamic Sciences (CIS) Canada, who realized that even though one in every four men, women, and
children now living on the Earth believe that “there is no god except Allah, and Muḥammad is the
Messenger of Allah,” and though they all affirm that the Qur’an is the last revealed Book sent to guide
humanity to the Straight Path, 80% of them do not understand the language of the Qur’an and have no or
little access to the Speech of Allah Most High. This linguistic disconnect is a new phenomenon in
Muslim history and it requires new solutions. Another aspect of the current global realities is the absence
of any authentic reference work on the Qur’an for serious seekers of Truth and for the academic world.
This realization led to the development a project to produce the first English language encyclopedia of
the Qur’an by Muslims—the Integrated Encyclopedia of the Qur’an (IEQ). Conceived as a seven-
volume authoritative contribution to and an in-depth reference work about Muslim scholarship on the
Qur’an, this landmark project strives to present a trove of knowledge about the Qur’an and its exegetical
tradition as an indispensable tool for specialists as well as the engaged general reader. Its five hundred
and eighty-five entries in six volumes shall cover all concepts, persons, places, things, and events
mentioned in the Qur’an; the seventh volume is devoted to indices and supplementary material, including
a thematic cross-referencing index of the entries in the preceding volumes.
After extensive discussions and meetings with almost all known Qur’an scholars in all parts of the world,
an international team of scholars was brought together to produce this unique work. Actual writing
started in 2009 and when the first volume came out in 2013, there was an unprecedented praise and
support for it by scholars from around the world.
Volume 2 will be published in 2018, in sha Allah.
Held to a high standard of academic rigor, IEQ draws on a wide range of traditional Muslim
sources, including exegeses, Hadith collections and commentaries, classical lexicons, biographical
dictionaries, universal histories, works of jurisprudence, Prophetic biographies, and treatises on
spiritual and moral psychology—some of which have never before been presented in any
encyclopedic work on Islam in a Western language. IEQ is also poised to become the standard
reference work in the academic work for decades to come; it fills a critical gap as currently there exists no
encyclopedia of the Qur’an which presents its message through authentic Islamic sources and provides
fully-referenced material on all concepts, places, persons, events, and things mentioned in the Qur’an.
Dr. Muzaffar will be discussing the IEQ project, its importance and future. The program will begin at 5 pm and will conclude with dinner followed by ‘Isha prayer. The event is free and open to all. We highly encourage everyone to attend this important event.
